In Conversation: Karen Solie and Sarah Howe
When granting Karen Solie the 2025 T.S. Eliot Prize for Wellwater, the judges described the collection as holding “the two sentiments, The world is a beautiful place / The world is a terrible place, in perfect equipoise”. Wellwater had been shortlisted alongside Sarah Howe’s collection Foretokens, which navigates the complex inheritance of family, language and colonialism, re-examining the clouded past of Howe’s mother: abandoned as a baby and taken in, at the turbulent dawn of Communist China, by a woman with her own hidden motives. Join both poets as they discuss these two luminous collections, in conversation with Theresa Muñoz.
